How to judge plumbing work

Most plumbing emergencies are the visible end of a slow problem: a supply line that has been weeping behind drywall, a water heater whose anode rod gave up years ago, or a drain line that has been narrowing with scale. The value of a good plumber is largely in catching the slow version before it becomes the loud one.

Water pressure, pipe material and water chemistry interact more than most homeowners expect. Hard water shortens fixture life; pressure above roughly 80 psi stresses every joint in a house. Asking what a plumber measures — not just what they replace — is a fair way to judge one.

Common service intervals for household plumbing (general maintenance guidance, not a service promise)

Anode rod check2–4 yearsA spent rod moves corrosion to the tank itself
Supply hoses (washer)Replace every 5 yearsBurst hoses are a leading cause of water damage
Main shutoff exerciseAnnuallyA seized valve turns a small leak into a large one
Drain line inspectionAs symptoms appearSlow drains often precede a full blockage

What customers say

John did a great job quickly replacing one of the water valves for my washing machine. He was honest and let me know that the other valve was still in good shape and didn’t need to be replaced. Always appreciate the great work and honestly I get from Carters.

Kendell Lett

Jon did a great job replacing parts in our laundry room for us to get a new washer and dryer installed. They were very quick and came out very quickly to support our need.

Amy Fink

I knew I needed to replace the water heater after it had been leaking and the hot water ran out. I went online Sunday and was able to get an appointment for Tuesday afternoon. Mark was the first to come out and look at my old unit. Hey did a thorough assessment and gave me options. I had a 13 gallon tank, but 14 gallon tanks are cheaper so Mark made sure the measurements would work. Mark walked me through all of my options and was able to get a technician out the same day. My technician was John P. John called when he was 30 min from my home making sure I was still available. John was nice and explained what he was going to do and the best options for moving tanks in and out of the house. A few hours later, the new water heater was in! John ran through what he did, showing me pictures and explaining where things were. John then answered my questions and took payment before leaving. Had a great experience with Crater’s My Plumber and I’m grateful that over the next years they will be serving my water heater!
